I dont remember the first thing I ever drew, but I do remember realizing that it seemed to come easier to me than other kids when I was around five. I would be like, “What do you mean? Just draw a lazer gun. On the paper. Just DRAW one. Like this.” I seem to take more inspiration from stand up comics, comedy nerd types than any other medium. I appreciate it when a person has a unique way of contextualizing the average human condition. If you can make someone laugh about something ordinary in an all together new way, I think you’ve accomplished something pretty special. Louis C.K., Paul F. Tompkins and Patton Oswalt are particular favorites.
The kiddo seems to really enjoy art. She’s been painting since she could hold a brush and manages to combine shapes into recognizable configurations a bit more easily than other kids her age so maybe the art gene has passed to her. One thing I find interesting is that she, having an artist for a parent, automatically has a bit of a leg up because I can show her little tips and tricks that took me years to figure out on my own. She also draws on a Wacom Cintiq in Photoshop which is something most kids will never get to do.
